Meet Michael

Michael Lachenmeyer is a resident of Springfield and was raised in Wilbraham. A proud German, Italian, and Lebanese American, he is also a son, brother, cat dad, activist, and a former educator and journalist. At 27 years old, he is the first Democrat to contest the primary in the 12th Hampden District since 2006. Educated in the Wilbraham public schools before attending Loyola University Chicago and the University of Chicago, he has earned bachelor's degrees in political science and international relations, as well as a master’s degree in anthropology.

Michael pursued those degrees because he has always been driven by a commitment to serve others. While in college, he founded a chapter of the Indivisible Movement and was arrested on the picket line for joining a sit-in with graduate students protesting for better wages and working conditions. After graduating, he joined Americorps and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he led a Sunrise Movement hub and spearheaded local efforts to combat climate change and pollution. After completing his education, he returned to Wilbraham, where he worked as a subcontractor fact-checking AI systems for Google.

In March 2025, Michael visited Beacon Hill to lobby for single-payer universal healthcare. During the visit, staff in Representative Puppolo’s office indicated that while the Representative was sympathetic to the idea, he would not publicly support the bill. That experience ultimately motivated Michael to challenge the Representative, driven by the belief that a lack of competition breeds complacency.

Michael brings a people-first approach to leadership that prioritizes community wellbeing over personal or partisan gain. He lives that commitment by serving on the boards of Friends of Wilbraham-Hampden Veterans and Springfield Conservation and Nature Stewardship, Inc. He is also a member of the Springfield Chapter of Neighbor to Neighbor and volunteers for numerous organizations, including PFLAG East Longmeadow, Rachel’s Table, and Here Today Adopted Tomorrow Animal Sanctuary.
